Fresno County finds printing error on some Vote Center ballots for Fresno Unified trustee races; votes still count correctly (Nov. 1)
Quick Read
- What: Ballots printed by ballot-marking devices at Fresno County Vote Centers show the wrong race title for the Fresno Unified School District Trustee Areas 1, 3 and 4 contests. They say "Fowler Unified" instead of "Fresno Unified," the Fresno County Elections Department said Oct. 31.
- Does my vote count? Yes. The county says the ballot still records the voter's choice, and the vote is counted in the correct Fresno Unified trustee contest. No other contests are affected.
- What you can do: If you live in Fresno Unified Trustee Area 1, 3 or 4, you can ask for a ballot printed on demand at any Vote Center instead of using the touchscreen device. Those ballots do not have the error.
- Mail ballots: Vote-by-mail ballots do not show the error, ABC30 reported.
- When: Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Questions: Fresno County Elections, (559) 600-8683.
Some Fresno voters who use a touchscreen machine at a Vote Center before or on Election Day will see a mistake on their printed ballot. The Fresno County Elections Department said Saturday, Oct. 31, that it found a "minor typographical printing error" on a limited number of ballots printed by the county's ballot-marking devices.
The error affects only the Fresno Unified School District Trustee Areas 1, 3 and 4 contests, the county said in a news release.
What the error looks like
On the screen of the ballot-marking device, voters who live in those trustee areas see the correct title, Fresno Unified School District. But when the ballot prints, the contest title reads "Fowler Unified School District Trustee Areas 1, 3, or 4" instead of Fresno Unified, according to the release.
Fresno County Clerk/Registrar of Voters James A. Kus has confirmed that the ballot still records the voter's choice correctly and that the vote is counted in the correct Fresno Unified School District trustee contest, the county said. No other contests on the ballot are affected.
Your options at a Vote Center
The department said it cannot change how these ballots print from the ballot-marking devices at this time. Signs will be posted at all ballot-marking devices explaining the error.
Voters who are eligible to vote in Fresno Unified Trustee Area 1, 3 or 4 may ask for a ballot printed on demand at any Vote Center, instead of using a ballot-marking device. Ballots printed on demand do not show the error, the county said. Vote-by-mail ballots do not show it either, ABC30 reported.
Extra checks after Election Day
After Election Day, the county will draw additional precincts in each of the three trustee areas for auditing in the Manual Tally, the release says. For future elections, the county plans to add another manual proofing step for ballots printed by ballot-marking devices, on top of the proofing it already does on ballots designed to be marked by hand.
"The Fresno County Clerk/Registrar of Voters apologizes for any confusion or inconvenience this typographical printing error may cause," the department said.
