  • Now: The lockdown has been lifted. The main entrance and the Emergency Department entrance are open, and normal hospital operations have resumed, deputies said.
  • Safety: Deputies said there was no active attack at the hospital. They plan to keep an increased law enforcement presence on campus while they monitor the situation.
  • Second time: It is the second lockdown at Valley Children's since Oct. 16, when the hospital also locked down after threats, the Fresno Bee reported.

Valley Children's Hospital is open again after a lockdown on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 1. The hospital, on the San Joaquin River in Madera County, received a threatening telephone call around noon, according to the Madera County Sheriff's Office, KSEE24/CBS47 and the Fresno Bee reported.

The Sheriff's Office said there was "no active attack occurring at the hospital." Deputies arrived just after noon to investigate the threat and worked with hospital staff and administration to protect patients, families and employees.

Patients diverted, roads closed

During the lockdown, the hospital put diversion protocols in place and did not accept patients arriving by car, ambulance or helicopter, the Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post, ABC30 reported. Deputies closed access to the hospital property from Peck Avenue and Randall Avenue and asked the public to avoid the area and use other routes.

A hospital spokesperson confirmed the lockdown. "The safety of our patients, families, and workforce is our top priority, and we're following well-established protocols," the hospital said in a statement to KSEE24.

Lockdown lifted

Later Sunday afternoon, the Sheriff's Office said the lockdown at the hospital and across the campus had been lifted. The main and Emergency Department entrances are open, and all entrances have reopened, the Fresno Bee and ABC30 reported. Deputies said they will keep an increased law enforcement presence on campus while they closely monitor the situation.

Officials had not said who made the call or whether anyone had been arrested as of Sunday afternoon.

Not the first time

Valley Children's was also placed on lockdown on Oct. 16 after receiving threats. That lockdown was later lifted, the Fresno Bee reported.

The Sheriff's Office reminds anyone with a medical emergency to call 9-1-1 and follow the dispatcher's instructions.
