Visalia extends its pause on data centers for nearly 11 more months
Quick Read
- What: The Visalia City Council voted unanimously Oct. 19 to extend a moratorium on data centers by 10 months and 15 days.
- Why: The city has no zoning rules for data centers yet. Staff are studying size, power and water use, air quality and noise, plus new state laws.
- Next: The council can extend the pause once more, or decide whether to allow or ban data centers.
Data centers will stay out of Visalia city limits for now. At its Oct. 19 meeting, the Visalia City Council voted unanimously to extend a moratorium on data centers by 10 months and 15 days, The Sun-Gazette reported.
The city first passed a 45-day moratorium in September, after the issue came to the council in August over concerns about how much water and energy data centers can use. While a moratorium is in place, no data center can be developed in the city.
According to the staff report, Visalia has no zoning rules or development standards for data centers. City staff have been researching size, energy and water use, air quality, noise and other features, and reviewing new state laws, said Paul Bernal, the city's planning and community preservation director.
What people said
Two people spoke during public comment. Resident Maria Guillen opposed the extension and said many residents would rather see data centers banned. Cherie Cabral, speaking for the Western Steel Council and the California Construction Labor Management Trust, also opposed the extension and said data centers bring more benefits than drawbacks.
City Attorney James Koontz said the city is not violating any codes with the moratorium. The council can extend it one more time or make a permanent decision later.
